‘Double Grandmother Aquarium Retreat’ is the first exhibition to showcase works from “Subscribe to Something.” A participatory art project by Guy Titterington that invites individuals to engage with language, chance, and visual interpretation through a monthly postal subscription. Each month, subscribers host an original painting created in response to a randomly generated word sourced from a digital generator that challenges both the artist and the viewer to construct meaning from the arbitrary.
The project examines communication, routine, ownership, worth, and patronage. Adopting the familiar format of subscription services, it replaces consumable goods with a moment of visual reflection—something intimate, physical, and uniquely personal. Each subscription is different, and you choose its duration.
To subscribe is to enter a quiet contract of curiosity. Each painting functions as both an artwork and a personal manifestation, shaped by randomness yet open to interpretation. Stripped of context and delivered through the impersonal machinery of the postal system, the work emphasises the strange intimacy of receiving art in this way.
Absurd, poetic, and contemplative, “Subscribe to Something” reflects Guy Titterington’s ongoing exploration of how meaning and identity are formed and continually reshaped.
